Recipe for Puppy Formula

1 -10oz can of evaporated milk - do not use non-pasteurized cows milk as it will cause scowers in puppies

1 - raw egg yoke

1 - cup whole plain yogurt (avoid using skim or fat free if possible)

1 - teaspoon light Karo Syrup

Mix ingredients well and keep refrigerated. Discard leftovers after 7 days

Warm formula to body temp (101 degrees). This is a thick mixture (if you need to, add more condensed milk or water to thin) so you will need to use a small syringe (without needle of course) but do not hold the puppies on their back as they can very easily aspirate. Hold them in an upright position and tilt the head back slightly. Insert the tip of the syringe in the side of the mouth and feed a little at a time. For newborn puppies (5 - 8 ozs) we found that 2 cc's every 2 hours resulted in an increase of weight and strength. Make sure to keep the puppy feeding with the mother so that it gets some of the antibodies and nutrients that the formula does not have. When the puppy has the strength to feed on its own and weight is stable discontinue formula use gradually over a couple of days.

The amount that we recommend per feeding is not written in stone but it was what our pups required to show any weight gain. With a sick or weak puppy please weigh twice a day and keep a written record so you can share it with your vet if needed. We recommend a food serving scale that you can get from Walmart for less than 10 dollars. Puppies should be weighed at least once a day for the first 4 weeks and should not go more than two days without a weight gain. If no weight gain or a weight loss occurs for two straight days you may just need to give the pup some individual quality time on a good teet. Weight loss the first day after birth is common but by day three they should be at or above their birth weight.

I hope this helps you the way it helped us

Best Wishes, Joe Sexton
